France — revolutionary moment

Four classical conditions fulfilled simultaneously. Plus a generation that legitimises violence, plus a physical aggression infrastructure that is already running.

Jacobus van Merksteijn

Sources

France is not on its way to a revolutionary moment. France is already inside it — only the trigger and the form remain to be determined.

1. What the polls say

Four independent French polls of June–July 2026 simultaneously reach their outermost quantile. That is no longer a “warning signal” — it is the condition itself.

2. The mobilisation infrastructure is ready

“Bloquons tout” on 10 September 2025 was leaderless, digitally organised, without union backing — and yet forced 80,000 police on the streets. For the autumn 2026 return this pattern is repeated, now with union support.

3. Four classical conditions — all present

Historical sociologists (Skocpol, Tilly, Goldstone) identify four simultaneous conditions that define a revolutionary situation. All four are now present in France.

Condition France 2026
Fiscal state crisis Fitch and S&P downgrades; the 2026 budget only survives through PS censure threats.
Paralysed political system Three blocks since June 2024; three prime ministers in one year; Lecornu II barely survives the censure of 6 July 2026 (132 in favour, 289 needed).
Elite divisions Zucman tax demanded by the left flank and rejected by Senate + Assembly; Piketty vs Macron; De Courson commission criticises the tax authority itself.
Mobilised mass with violence legitimacy 54% youth pro-violence; Bloquons tout 2.0; intersyndicale 18 September.

The cooling of the fiscal route is not a counter-force — it is displacement of method.

4. Where the aggression lands in policy

5. The apparent cooling is displacement

Odoxa July 2026: support for “tax the rich harder to close the deficit” falls from 80% (2024) to 68% (2026), sharpest among 18–34s (73–78% → 55–57%). Headline of Challenges/Odoxa: “la haine des riches s'essouffle en France”.

Wrong reading: hatred cools down. Correct reading: the same age group that abandons the fiscal route is the one where 54% now consider violence legitimate. The 12 points lost on tax-as-a-solution do not disappear into resignation. They shift into other methods.

6. Likely scenarios (July 2026 – 2027)

Scenario Form Trigger
1 · September 2026 as first release Bloquons tout 2.0 + intersyndicale 18/9 + budget debate + next downgrade. Budget 2026, fuel price, rating downgrade
2 · Physical aggression spreads beyond crypto H2 2026 – H1 2027. First high-profile case outside crypto makes the pattern public. First incident outside crypto
3 · Election crisis 2027 RN wins or comes very close. Elites refuse legitimation. Post-electoral escalation possible. 2027 outcome, court rulings
4 · Targeted intimidation of individuals In addition to 1 or 3. Industrialists, former ministers, prominent entrepreneurs as “symbols of the rich”. Symbolic figure caught in media storm

Conclusion

The usual scientific caution — “correlation is not prediction” — no longer applies once four or five independent indicators simultaneously, in the same direction, reach their outermost quantile.

What the sources do not determine is the timing and the precise form: classical revolution, permanent disruption à la yellow vests, or violent polarisation without takeover. But that the base conditions for a revolutionary moment are fulfilled is, on the data of June–July 2026, no longer a cautious claim.
